When AI Starts Thinking for Us

AI can make our lives easier, but I sometimes wonder if we are making ourselves too dependent on it.

Don’t get me wrong, AI is an incredible tool, and I use it daily. It sparks ideas, speeds up research, and boosts productivity. But there is a crucial line between assistance and reliance. When you instantly outsource every problem to AI, you stop building your own experience. You miss out on:

  • Trial and error, making mistakes and fixing them.
  • Problem-solving, understanding why something works, not just getting the result.
  • Judgment taking, responsibility for the real-world consequences of a decision.

Human history has been shaped by learning. From survival in prehistory to science, invention, and modern technology, we have progressed because we learned, questioned, experimented, and solved problems. But as AI moves from assisting us to making decisions for us, we risk something very different: cognitive passivity. If we stop questioning, stop learning, and simply accept what a machine tells us because it is faster and more convenient, we may slowly lose the ability or even the habit to think for ourselves.

The biggest danger isn’t AI making mistakes. It’s humans losing the ability or the habit to recognize those mistakes when they happen. AI should remain a tool, not a decision maker. It should help us think, not think for us. Because if we eventually let machines make our decisions while we simply accept the answers, we may discover that the biggest thing we have automated is our own thinking.

Keep using the tool. Just don’t surrender the critical thinking that brought us this far.
